Advantages of pig tail catheter

Pigtail catheter, named for its curly end and pigtail end, has been widely used in kidney, ureter and bladder surgery in urology department. The postoperative management of patients with pigtail internal catheter drainage tends to be simplified. Due to the built-in catheter, patients can move early, reduce the chance of infection, significantly reduce the nursing workload, and patients recover quickly after surgery, and the length of hospital stay is significantly shortened. Pigtail catheters are safe, can be operated at the bedside, and have similar efficacy to chest tubes in the treatment of pneumothorax patients. After the pigtail catheter is placed into the chest, the distal end of the pigtail catheter is naturally coiled into a pigtail shape, and multiple drainage holes are located inside the coiled catheter head end, and even can be perfectly looped through the fixing wire and fixed to the desired position. Its advantage lies in the characteristics of its material and shape, so that the pigtail catheter is also not easy to fold, twist and slip in the chest cavity, and the drainage hole is not easy to block and affect the drainage effect. Compared with the common chest tube group, the score of local pain after intubation decreased by more than 50% in the pigtail catheter group. Compared with the common chest tube group, the pigtail catheter group reduced the postoperative catheterization time, but the success rate of pneumothorax treatment, postoperative hospitalization time and the incidence of corresponding complications were not statistically significant. Therefore, compared with the common chest tube, the application of pigtail catheter in the treatment of pneumothorax can effectively reduce the postoperative catheterization time of patients, while the complications, postoperative hospitalization time and success rate have no statistical significance. Pig tail catheter can be used effectively for closed thoracic drainage in patients with pneumothorax.
